The greatest battle is currently being fought by members of the same team. IT Infrastructure and development are postponing and delaying patches in order to make sure they do not cause operational issues with critical systems. The security team is responsible for the disasters that occur so they are quick to force patching with little concern of what occurs to the critical assets, or so is the perception from all others.

A cost survey of 19 research universities shows that each institution spent an average of $299,579 during a five-week period one summer to fight off the so-called Blaster worm, one of many infections that have crippled college networks.

The cost does not include time spent by end- users, delay of projects, loss of reputation and any other indirect costs of the infection.
